Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world

Ushuaia, the capital of the Tierra del Fuego province, is situated on the slopes of the Cerro Martial around Bahía Encerrada overlooking the Canal Beagle.

It is the largest town of the Argentine part of Tierra del Fuego and is the southernmost city in the world. It was founded in 1884 by Comodoro Augusto Lassere.

Ushuaia continues to be a hub for cruise ships, both those rounding the tip of South America en route from Buenos Aires to Santiago, Chile, and more expedition-style ones heading to Antarctica.

The largest town and administrative center in Tiera del Fuego is Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world.
The climate is harsh in winter with temperatures dropping as low as -20°C. The southern part of the province is wet and the northern part is dry. Lowest temperatures are in July. Skiing is possible from early April to late October. The northern part is grassland with few trees and is superb grazing land.
Among the tourist attractions is the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego which is only a short distance away from Ushuaia towards the Ushuaia is the gateway to Antarctica and cruises to the Argentine Antarctic bases are organized by the National Tourist Organisation but increasingly Russian scientific vessels take on passengers. The best time to visit Antarctica is between December and March. Tierra del Fuego is linked with the Argentinea mainland by flights from Ushuaia and Río Grande. Air servicesmaybe cut in harsh winter conditions. Road transport between Río Grande and Ushuaia runs daily, and also between Río Grande and Porvenir in Chile.
